INDIANAPOLIS – Annual grants to strengthen Indiana’s heritage have been awarded to nine historic preservation and archaeology projects in eight Indiana communities.
The grants total $338,812 in federal funds allotted by the DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology. They will be matched by $332,636 in local and private funds, for a total projected investment of $671,448.
The federal funds come from the National Park Service, a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which distributes funds to the states through the Historic Preservation Fund Program. Since 1974, the state has awarded more than $18 million to Indiana communities through this program.
“Preserving our state’s historic and cultural resources is a vital part of our mission,” said DNR director and State Historic Preservation Officer Cameron F. Clark. “These grants help us to explore and better understand how we got here and who we are today.”
The projects for the 2013 funding cycle are as follows:
Dearborn County: Ball State University’s Department of Anthropology received a $49,782 grant to conduct an archaeological survey of 500 acres. Between 75 and 150 newly identified sites are expected to be added to the state’s archaeological database.
Floyd County: St. Elizabeth Regional Maternity Center received a $48,825 grant to rehabilitate windows in the former Holy Trinity Rectory.
Fort Wayne: The City of Fort Wayne Community Development received a $59,245 grant to prepare a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places for the North Anthony Historic District, which will include approximately 198 contributing properties. The project will also prepare and print two educational brochures, one on the North Anthony Historic District and the other on the Wildwood Historic District.
Indianapolis: The Indiana Supreme Court received a $6,430 grant to prepare a publication on the restoration of the Supreme Court Chambers.
Indianapolis: Irvington Development Organization received a $50,000 grant to stabilize and rehabilitate the Irvington Post Office.
