---- — The South Decatur volleyball teams improved to 3-1 overall by starting the week with wins on back-to-back nights.

South swept Shawe Memorial Monday night on the road.

“The girls played very well tonight,” said head coach Lisa Bennett. “We had a little slip in the second game with our serves, but were able to battle back to win it. Overall, I was very impressed with the girls’ teamwork tonight. Brittany Koors did an excellent job of moving the ball around to all our hitters in the front row and being able to read the court herself.”

Senior Courtney Billingsley contributed 19 points serving and picked eight digs from the back row.

“Courtney Billingsley had a wonderful game from the serving line,” said Bennett.

Seniors Ashley Johannigman, Julia Miller, Clarissa Baltus, and junior Megan Niese contributed at the net with a combined total of 18 kills and Olivia Watkins, according to Bennett, was even able to get in on the action at the net with a kill. Mariah Green was able to help Billingsley out in the back court by contributing six digs.

South defeated Milan Tuesday night in three sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17.

“The Lady Cougars played a great game tonight against the Indians,” said Bennett. “I was proud of their teamwork and determination. Overall, we were able to move our feet and get to the ball.”

South hit 53-for-63 on the night (84 percent) with 20 kills.

Johannigman had “a great night blocking,” said Bennett, with six block kills and contributed 10 attack kills.
