4-H animal shows to begin soon

GREENSBURG – With the Decatur County fair just around the corner, it’s time for 4-H members to get moving in preparation.

The following is a list of the scheduled animal shows and the pertinent information that goes along with them.

In a process that began with a weigh-in that took place in January, 4-H members registered their animals and completed official enrollment forms by May 15, allowing them entry to the animals shows at the county fair and, where applicable, entry in the 4-H livestock sale. All animals must meet the health requirements as listed in the 4-H Official Health Requirements. All animals must be under the care of the 4-H exhibitor no later than May 15. Animals enrolled after May 15 are ineligible to compete.

All 4-H participants are divided into three categories, depending on the shower’s grade in school. Level one covers grades three through five, level two covers grades six through eight and level three covers grades nine through twelve. Each level has different requirements based on their skills and experience.

Proper care for all animals is required, which includes timely feeding and watering, as well as clean up around displays. Failure to meet this requirement could result in disqualification and forfeiture of the right to participate in showing, as well as loss of winnings. The shows, times and a bit of information on each is listed below:

4-H Beef

Check-in and weigh-in of livestock for the 4-H Beef will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. July 13. Judging will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 15 in the show area at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.

In order to assemble a beef project to be shown at the county fair, each 4-H member must first select a steer calf or weanling heifer calf weighing at least 400 pounds, complete the livestock record, complete all enrollment forms on time and identify each animal with an ear tattoo or tag.
