The Grand Champion will be allowed to auction a gallon of milk and the Reserve Grand Champion will be allowed to auction a pound of cheese in the 4-H livestock auction. Awards will be given for Beginner Showmanship, Intermediate Showmanship, Senior Showmanship, Expert Showmanship, Junior Champion, Senior Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion. A grooming brush will be presented to all members completing their first year in the 4-H Dairy Project.
4-H Dairy Goat
Check-in and weigh-in of dairy goats will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. July 13. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. July 17 in the show arena at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.
Any animal to be sold must be registered immediately after the show. Project manuals must be included with exhibits for all grade levels. Participants are grouped into three levels based on their grade in school.
All goats will be shown by breed and class and an exhibitor may show no more than two goats in each class. All goats that milk are required to be milked between 9 and 11 p.m. July 16. Male goats or goats with horns are not permitted at the fair. All Wether’s must be dehorned- no exceptions. Every goat must wear a collar and have a tie chain available. Goats must also be identified by an ear tattoo or tag and be shown by a 4-H member.
Exhibitors are suggested to wear long dark slacks and a white shirt, or an all-white outfit to exhibit dairy goats. Exhibitors of meat goats must wear Western outfits and holes will not be permitted. To be eligible to show in any Clover Bud/ Mini 4-H animal show, the mini 4-H’er (pre K to second grade) must enroll in the Clover Buds at the Extension Office prior to the show.
The show will proceed in the following order, alternating classes with the meat goats and shown by age, not breed. Junior Kids, Intermediate Kids, Senior Kids, Junior Yearlings, Senior Yearlings, Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion, Get of Sire, Produce of Dam, Mother & Daughter. Awards will be given for Best in Show: Junior Doe, Senior Doe, Grand Champion Boer Wether, Grand Champion Dairy Wether, Grand Champion Meat Wether, Grand Champion Pygmy Wether, Goat Herdsman, Beginner Showmanship, Intermediate Showmanship, Senior Showmanship and Expert Showmanship. Ribbons will be given to the top five placing in each class.
