Knights ready for Christmas raffle

---- — GREENSBURG — Every year in December, the Greensburg Knights of Columbus lends its facility to the Daily News Cheer Fund to use as a base of operations.

The Cheer Fund, of course, is a more-than-century-old philanthropic holiday tradition that provides toys, food and clothing to Decatur Countians in need of a little help during the holidays.

According to Greensburg Knights of Columbus Warden and Program Director Tom Simmermeyer, however, because the Knights of Columbus can’t stage its weekly BINGO event (held every Sunday at 5:30 p.m.), the organization loses substantial income during December.

The month without income is always worked into the budget, Simmermeyer emphasized, so it’s not a devastating loss, but the order nonetheless holds a yearly raffle to help defer the losses.

On Tuesday, Simmermeyer stopped by the Daily News offices to formally announce the 2013 “K of C Christmas Raffle.”

The group is selling 50 $20 tickets for the event. The first-place prize is a $500 gift card for either Tops True Value or Stephens Jewelry, with the winner choosing which. Second place is an “authentic Andrew Luck Jersey (size 48 L)” and third prize is $50 cash.

The prize drawings will be held at 8 p.m., Dec. 14, at the Greensburg Knights of Columbus. Winners don’t need to be present to win.

“We only sell 50 tickets because that makes your odds of winning very good,” Simmermeyer said. “Plus, this is a great way for the community to help the Cheer Fund by helping support the Knights of Columbus.”

He added, “We’ve been donating the use of our building to the Cheer Fund at least 35 years. The Knights of Columbus is all about helping the community, so it’s just part of what we do.”

Daily News Publisher and Cheer Fund President Laura Welborn said she couldn’t more pleased with the ongoing Knight of Columbus/Cheer Fund partnership.

“We couldn’t do the Cheer Fund without them,” she said. “We hope it’s a long partnership, and we’re thrilled to partner with them in this wonderful community program, which is for the kids.”
