Teenagers test artistic talents

Library expanding teen programs

Greensburg — While the turnout wasn’t huge for Easter egg painting, Lori Durbin, librarian in charge of teen activities at the Greensburg-Decatur County Library, said this week's activities have been drawing 15-to-20 teens.

“We’re making the teen area a place where kids can come and hang out,” said Durbin.

Durbin said the newly remodeled teen area has been decorated all week by the teens themselves, partially to encourage the kids to start spending some of their free time at the library.

“They say ‘I don’t like to read.’” Durbin explained. “We’ve added more computers in the teen area, and we’re thinking about adding a flat screen T.V. for gaming. They’ll find something to do besides reading.”

The teens painting Easter eggs expressed approval of a television for gaming, and even the possibility of future lock-ins.

Durbin said that after-hours events such as lock-ins and hide-and-seek-in-the-dark have been popular. The library aims, said Durbin, to provide more opportunities for teens to have a safe place to spend their time either doing homework or using the library as a hang-out between school and sports practices.

Durbin has also had an ongoing project for teens to paint a puzzle piece which will eventually become part of a simple, square-shaped puzzle.

“We wanted to show that everyone in the world is different,” Durbin said, demonstrating the finished pieces, which sparkled brightly as part of the unfinished puzzle. Every piece was styled differently — as different as their creators.
