Decatur County natives express their RAW talent

Greensburg — Catie Farrell and Deidra McKenzie showcased their photography at the nationwide RAW art show in Indianapolis Thursday night.

Farrell, a 2006 North Decatur High School graduate, and McKenzie, a 2009 Greensburg High School graduate, work together as photographers.

Thursday night was their first exhibit and also a chance to go to a Hollywood showcase in December. The showcase is part of the “RAWards,” a nationwide Indie artist competition.

As potentially uplifting as success in the competition could be, McKenzie and Ferrall were excited just to have an exhibit. “We’re just living in the moment,” said Farrell, “But if we make it famous we certainly won’t complain.”

Farrell and McKenzie grew up as neighbors until, at approximately six years of age, one of the girls moved. Several years later, they met again while attending Ivy Tech and recognized each other. “We became best friends again,” said McKenzie. The young women also went on to start an artistic partnership.

Farrell and McKenzie do a variety of photography though their favorite endeavors are with time-lapse, fine art photography. The fine arts give Farrell and McKenzie plenty of opportunities to experiment, “We try to be unique,” said McKenzie. The two young women felt that feedback partially reflected their uniqueness.

“People have said a lot of things like ‘this is so cool,’ and ‘how did you come up with this?’.” said Farrell. Farrell went on to say that she felt she and McKenzie simply brainstormed some “really cool stuff” together.

The two artists are planning on opening an art studio on the square in Greensburg soon. The optimistic time for renovations to be finished is in December.

“We’re in a weird place with no studio,” Ferrell explained, “We have more ideas than resources.”

The name of their future studio will be True Expressions Photography, and they do accept commissions. Farrell said the going rate is $75 an hour, though the rate may change depending on the subject. The average photo shoot is about three hours, depending on the subject.

True Expressions Photography will be located at 1013 W. Main Street, Suite 1, and can be contacted at 317-850-5084. More information about RAW can be found at RAWartists.org.
