DCF buys smocks for school volunteers

Greensburg — Decatur Community Foundation has given the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) monies to buy smocks for all the volunteers in Decatur County schools.

The smocks are a bright royal blue and have the name “Foster Grandparent Program” embroidered on the smocks in white thread. The visibility the smocks to this project reaffirms the importance of the FGP within the school community.  This intergenerational and early intervention is a key part of our program.

In Decatur County there are currently 13 FG volunteering in the elementary schools and Head Start Program. FG volunteer 4 hours daily every day school is in session. Last year, the Decatur FG had a total of 10,374 hours and mentored approximately 200+ students.

The End of Year Assessment showed the children mentored improved 92 percent in English, Language Arts and Math skills in the three highest categories possible.

According to Greensburg Elementary Principal Rock Linville, “We appreciate the nurturing and tutoring that our Foster Grandparents do with our elementary students. Our students learn that senior citizens are likeable, caring adults who desire to help make a difference in their lives.”

The FGP recently received monies from the Decatur United Fund which has been a huge boost to the program also. The FGP is blessed to be able to be recognized by the community for all the volunteers’ hard work. Thank you to both organizations.
