Two critically injured in three-vehicle crash

Greensburg — A three-vehicle crash sent four people to the hospital late Friday morning, with two of the victims suffering critical injuries.

According to lead investigator Jason Hankins, senior trooper with the Indiana State Police (ISP), the accident occurred a little before 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Barbara Niese, 48, of Rushville, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Astro van, southbound on U.S. Highway 421 at the State Road 3 Bypass, Greensburg, while 53-year-old Danny Williams of Russellville, Ky., was driving northbound on State Road 3 in a 2013 Volvo semi-tractor, pulling a box trailer.

Based on his investigation, Trooper Hankins surmises that Niese disregarded the traffic light and was struck broadside by the semi.

After impact, the semi pushed the van into a 2003 Dodge pickup truck driven by 63-year-old John Marlow of Greensburg. Niese and her 13-year-old passenger suffered critical injuries.

Niese was transported to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, while her passenger was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital, Indianapolis, with life-threatening injuries. John Marlow and his wife, Jo Anne, were both transported to Decatur County Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Williams was not injured.

Trooper Hankins was assisted at the scene by Senior Trooper David Noah, Trooper Chris Howell and ISP Motor Carrier Inspector Bill St. John. Also assisting at the scene was the Greensburg Police Department, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Decatur County EMS, and the Greensburg Fire Department.

This crash, which remains under investigation, occurred less than a quarter mile from yesterday’s fatal crash at the State Road 3 Bypass and Carver Street in Greensburg.

The Daily News, which was at the scene of the accident, will publish further information regarding this crash as it becomes available.
