A positive minute: P is for power

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

When you think of the word “power,” what comes to mind? Recently we had an event here in our county called, Power of the Past. The focus is on the farm machinery of a past era. People get a chance to see how steam powered engines work along with other equipment.

The amazing thing is these machines still work. They work because someone takes the time to work on them, refurbish and maintain the units to be in operating condition. They don’t maintain themselves. It takes a human being with the skills to know how each machine works. This person knows the machine inside and out.

This is much the same principle of our lives. When we have placed our trust in the Lord, He has given us opportunity to have a wonderful life. In our scripture this week we are told that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Much is said these days about child proofing our homes so the toddler doesn’t stick something in an electrical outlet and gets injured. The way my grandmother childproofed our home was, “Go ahead boy, go ahead and touch that hot stove. You’ll not do it again!” And, I didn’t. That gave me a healthy respect for hot stoves.

I also gained knowledge of power. I eventually learned that I had the power to make good decisions. I perceive that one of the problems in our society is that many have not taken the time to learn what their abilities are. They have not learned they have the power within them to say no to those things that are destructive.
