Greensburg — GREENSBURG — On Oct. 25, Greensburg’s Tri Kappa Sorority held its 5th Annual Bingo Night at Greensburg Elementary School.

Sorority Member Joyce Holtkamp, this year’s Bingo organizer, told the Daily News that the Sisters sold nearly three hundred tickets.

“We certainly had a capacity crowd,” Holtkamp said. “It felt like more than 300.”

Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships awarded to students at all three local-area high schools.

Holtkamp noted that suggestions from last year’s attendees helped make this year’s edition even more successful.

“We had a handful of suggestions from last year that we incorporated into this year’s event,” she said.

One of those, she continued, was the donation of pull tabs from the top of soda cans to the Ronald McDonald house.

“As a sorority, we’ve donated our pull tabs to Ronald McDonald House for years,” Holtkamp explained. “But someone suggested that we have all our Bingo attendees pull off their tabs and throw them in a special can just for tabs. It worked out very well.”

According to information provided to the Daily News, 15 players won gift bags donated by Premier Ag at the Bingo event, while another 15 won one of nine Longaberger Baskets filled with “many wonderful goodies,” or seven Vera Bradley designer handbags, also filled with smaller prizes.

Additionally, a Christmas “Money Tree” was also awarded, as was $363 in cash to the winner of the evening’s 50/50 drawing.

According to Holtkamp, the Bingo is one of the Sorority’s two biggest yearly fund-raisers, the other being the group’s yearly nut sale, which was concluded in September. Like the Bingo event, the nut sale also funds scholarships for students at all three local-area high schools.

According to a press release, Tri Kappa “is a statewide, non-profit, philanthropic organization, which promotes projects in the areas of charity, culture and education. Statewide, Tri Kappa offers several scholarships annually since 1913. Locally, Greensburg’s Omega chapter of Tri Kappa awarded $6,000 to area students last year.”
