Early birds get out the vote

Greensburg — The Decatur County Court House opened for absentee voting Tuesday morning to enthusiastic response.

Decatur County Deputy Clerk Faith Koors, who oversees early voting, said that, by 2:30, the courthouse had served 93 early voters.

“The response has just been overwhelming,” Koors said. “We haven’t stopped today. We had a line of people waiting to cast ballots at 7:50 this morning.”

Barbara Barnett, who lives near Clarksburg, was waiting outside the polling place when the Daily News visited the courthouse.

“I volunteer at Morning Breeze every Tuesday to conduct their weekly sing-a-long,” Barnett explained. “It’s so convenient to stop by the courthouse and cast my vote while I’m already in town.”

Barnett, who’s voted early every year since 2006, also likes the considerably smaller crowds involved in absentee voting.

“In Clarksburg, you vote at the fire station, and it’s always just so packed,” she explained. “This is a great way to avoid all that chaos.”

Jim Batterton, who lives between Clarksburg and Greensburg, agreed. Batterton didn’t actually cast a vote Tuesday, but instead picked up a “sample ballot” for his mother (sample ballots list all the candidates).

“She’ll study the sample,” Batterton said, “and then we’ll come back in a few days, and we’ll both cast early ballots.”

Batterton will have several chances to do so.

Absentee voting runs from at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 9 through Nov. 2, in courthouse room 126.

The courthouse will host two additional absentee sessions from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, and another from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Nov. 5.
