SDHS Music Parents hosting second Fall Fun Run 5K

WESTPORT — The Music Parents of South Decatur Jr.-Sr. High School (SDHS) will be hosting the second annual Fall Fun Run 5K Walk/Run on October 19.

The Fall Fun Run has become an annual event for SDHS with its second running this year. The event is open to everyone, with an entry fee of just $25, which includes an event shirt. The proceeds from the event will be used to fund the Disney World trip to Florida for the band and choir students of SDHS.

Trophies and a waiver for the 2014 Fall Fun Run entry fee will be awarded to the overall male and female winners of the run, with separate winners for the walk, so they may defend their titles in next year’s race. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female racers to cross the finish line in each age group. Age groups are 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over. Dogs are welcome, though owners are asked to please clean up after their pets. There will be a special award presented to the first dog to cross the finish line with their owner.

Last year, the race was on the grounds of SDHS, but for the second annual event, racers will take to the streets of Westport. The Decatur County Sherriff’s Department has worked with race organizers to plan a safe route and will be on hand to ensure the safety of both drivers and racers.

The 3.1 mile course will depart from the Westport Clinic, located at 308 East Mulberry Street at 9 a.m., travel along Main Street, down Water Plant Road and back into Westport along High School Road, concluding at the clinic. The entire course will be on paved roads and relatively easy to traverse.

The race will be officially timed by a company called Indiana Timing and winners will be posted at the end of the event, as well as online on the company’s website. In addition to overall scores, racers will be able to see their average time per mile and their ranking within their age group on the website. Indiana Timing will set up at the finish line with their professional timing equipment to record times as each runner crosses the finish line. There will also be a clock near the end so participants will have an idea of what their final time will be.
