Pirate boys soccer wins on Senior Night

The Greensburg boys soccer team celebrated Senior Night with a 5-2 win over Hauser Thursday, honoring seniors Joe Buening and Tye Fleetwood.

First-year Greensburg head coach Nicolas Dye-Pellison commented on the senior duo after the win.

“They both assumed their role of captains,” he said. “It was very difficult to go from playing with teammates you’ve played with all your life, to playing for a new team. They did a great job of supporting, guiding and coaching them. They stepped up and integrated them to the team.”

Buening recorded a hat trick with three goals, while Fleetwood and junior defender Spencer Kuehl each scored one goal apiece.

All five Pirate goals hit the net in the first half of play.

Buening put the home team on the board at the 32:32 mark. The defense cleared the ball, but Buening took possession and dribbled down for an unassisted score to make it 1-0.

Junior Spencer Kuehl scored on a penalty kick at the 31:05 mark, making it 2-0.

Freshman Kyle Bumbala tallied an assist on Buening’s second goal on a cross pass, making it 3-0 at the 19:47 mark.

On Buening’s second goal, Kuehl headed the ball, but it was swatted by Hauser’s goalkeeper. On the second attempt, though, Buening headed it in to put the Pirates up 4-0 with 16 minutes left in the half.

Fleetwood’s goal at the 4:32 mark was played after the goalkeeper cleared it, but Fleetwood took it and scored to cap Greensburg’s day on offense.

Dye-Pellison said he was pleased to see the seniors get in on the winning action.

“They gave everything,” he said. “It was their night. The win is a plus, but I wanted them to have fun.”

Greensburg will compete in the Boys Soccer Sectional 56 at Waldron High School. The Pirates will play Oldenburg Academy Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m., and the second game will pair Hauser against Waldron at 7 p.m. The championship is Saturday, Oct. 12 between the game one winner and the game two winner, at 7 p.m.

The regional is scheduled for Oct. 17 and Oct. 19 at Knightstown.
