On Monday and Tuesday night, Arbor Grove residents received handmade flannel blankets from the American Legion Womens Auxiliary to help keep warm for the expectantly bitter winter.
The Auxiliary arrived with the gift-wrapped blankets to be passed out by Santa and his little helpers. Several young women and ladies volunteered for the task, much to the gratitude of Arbor Grove residents.
The Auxiliary plans to visit other nursing homes to deliver sweatshirts to veterans.
In addition to the gifts from the Auxiliary, Arbor Grove held the annual Christmas dinner for residents, and invited family members to visit and eat.
Arbor Grove activities director Annette Keihn said she was overwhelmingly surprised that turnout was much bigger than expected. Of 71 residents, 90 individual family members arrived to visit 15 more people than expected.
The families were served turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and a variety of pies. During dinner, pianist Linda Roberts played Christmas tunes for the feasting families.
Arbor Grove was a grove of music, with Greensburg High School Choir performing for the residents, as well as two churches which came to carol.
The visiting children were given the opportunity to sit with Santa and have their pictures professionally taken.
