A house fire claimed the life of a Greensburg man Friday morning.
According to information from the Greensburg Fire Department GFD), emergency crews responded to a house fire at 1680 Democracy Street just after 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Firefighters gained entry to the residence soon after arriving at the scene and found Gerald Dean McKinsey, 42, dead in his bedroom.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and a cause of death has yet to be determined.
Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks said an autopsy on McKinsey will likely be performed in Indianapolis Monday. After that, a preliminary cause of death may be determined; however, a toxicology report will not be available for four to six weeks, she said.
GFD Chief Scott Chasteen said the fire was contained to a single bedroom in the home. McKinsey was the only individual at the residence when the fire broke out.
GFD Captain Mark Baldwin told the Daily News the home primarily suffered smoke damage.
Present at the scene were two Decatur County EMS units, the Greensburg Fire Department, Greensburg Police Sgt. Dave Wilson and Decatur County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Kramer.
The Daily News will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
