Crash investigators awaiting NTSB arrival

Greensburg — Greensburg Police Department Detective Bill Meyerrose told news media investigators of Sunday’s fatal plane crash are awaiting the arrival of members of the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) Monday morning.

In an early morning news briefing, Meyerrose stated the NTSB will lead the investigation once they arrive, but the detective couldn’t put a definite timetable on when that would occur. Meyerrose’s best assumption was that NTSB investigators would arrive between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks was expected to arrive at the crash site Monday morning. Investigators have declined to release the names of the victims until the coroner chooses to do so.

Four people were killed Sunday evening when a private plane crashed about a mile to a mile and a half south of the Greensburg Municipal Airport.

The crash was discovered at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday night and the four fatalities were confirmed to news media approximately an hour later, following notification of the families.

Meyerrose stated the crash site remained undisturbed Monday morning, noting the site had been secured and the bodies of the victims remained there pending the coroner’s arrival.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Fog and a drizzling rain may have contributed to the cause, but that has not been confirmed by authorities at this time.

The Daily News will continue to have breaking coverage of this story as it becomes available.
