FAA arrives at crash site

GREENSBURG — Three members of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) arrived at the scene of Sunday’s fatal plane crash Monday morning, according to Decatur County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Robert Duckworth.

The group reached the scene at approximately 10:45 a.m. Monday and later began sifting through the wreckage. Lt. Duckworth conducted a media press conference at 11:30 a.m., informing media of the FAA personnel’s arrival.

The identities of the victims were not made available during the press conference. Duckworth stated that information should be made public at some point Monday.

Members of the the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were expected to arrive at the crash site between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Duckworth said the FAA’s recovery effort began at about 11:20 a.m. and involved stabilization of the aircraft which came to rest on uneven terrain.

Lt. Duckworth also serves as director of the Decatur County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

The FAA lost radar signal on the plane shortly before 6:30 p.m. Sunday and notified the EMA and the Greensburg Police Department. Moments earlier, a civilian had placed an emergency call to the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department reporting a plane crash.

The plane was discovered at approximately 10:45 p.m. Shortly before midnight, GPD Detective William Meyerrose announced that all four individuals on board the plane were killed in the crash.

A multi-agency effort involving emergency responders from Decatur, Bartholomew, Rush, Ripley, Jennings, Shelby and Hamilton counties responded to the scene.

The Daily News will have more information on this story as it develops.
