James Roy Worthall, formerly of Hartsville, passed away Friday July 10 in Mississippi.

He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 11, 1918 to Leon and Mary Howley Worthall, who preceded him in death. His family later moved to Indianapolis in 1928 where he graduated from Shortridge High School in 1935 and the International Barber School in 1937. It was at the International Barber School that he met Pauline Carr. They fell in love and were married March 25, 1937 moving to Hartsville shortly thereafter where they lived the majority of their lives. They were married for more than 65 years until her death in 2003. He later married Mamie Gordon of Lewisville, Miss., on Nov. 12, 2006 and she survives.

Mr. Worthall had a well-rounded life that included many professions and memberships. he operated a barbershop for numerous years in Hartsville where he also seved as the town marshall, was a Freemason and was involved in the organization of the first Hartsville Fire Dept. He was also on the Republican Precinct Committee, as well a judge and inspector of the Election Board for many years. He was a member of the Society of Safety Engineers, a safety director a Camp Atterbury Job Corp Center and was a licensed vocational teacher. Other employment included General Electric , Westinghouse Learning Corp, and IOSHA.

Mr. Worthall is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline (Norman) Click of North Vernon, and Beth Mantooth of Fort Riley, Kan. He is also survived by grandchildren Vicki (John) Emmert of Darlington, Kay (Donald) Tedder of Greensburg, Marijo Wade (George McDaniel) of Westport, Sandy (Jenny) Mantooth of Cedarburg, Wis., Shelda (George) Miller of Kentucky , and Corey (Jonathan) Harlan of Fort Riley, Kan. Additionally, he is survived by 15 great-grandchildren.

He is also preceded in death by siblings Patricia, Dorothy, Michael, Evaline, John, Minnie, Leon and a set of twins.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m Thursday at Hope Moravian Cemetery with the Rev. Ed Boston officiating. Calling will be at the cemetery on Thursday from 2:30 p.m. until service time.
