Alfred L. "Les" Arias, Jr., 87 of Seymour, Indiana passed away on July 22, 2008 at 1:52 a.m. at the Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

He was born in Mobile, Alabama on January 13, 1921, the son of Alfred L. and Jessie Olive (Johnson) Arias.

On March 18, 1946, he married Yvette Debs who preceded him in death. On March 22, 1974, he married Delores (Hatfield) Mathews, who survives.

He had worked in the shipyards of Mobile, Ala. and Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He graduated from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and sailed on merchant ships, taught seamanship in the U.S. Maritime Service, and served in the Navy on submarines and surface ships. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. For several years he owned an office machine store in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was an ordained Baptist Deacon serving in that and various other positions in churches in the cities where he lived. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Seymour.

He is survived by his wife, Delores (Hatfield) Arias; son, James L. (Karen)  Arias; daughter, Jeannette (Timothy) Arias Flynn; step-son, John E. (Brenda) Mathews; grandchildren, James P. (Cavi) Arias, Karen Alesa (Chris) Thompson, Colin Flynn and Carmen Flynn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Yvette and one son, Paul.

Friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 24 at the Voss Chapel in Seymour and from 9 - 10 a.m. on Friday. Funeral services will be held at at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25 at the chapel with Rev. D. G. Morris and Rev. Tim Lantzy officiating. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.
