Herman A. "Leo" Leonard, 81

Herman A. “Leo” Leonard, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 25, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his wife and children. He had struggled with poor health for many years before being called to Heaven for a much-deserved rest.

He was born Oct. 21, 1931 in Indianapolis, the son of Dr. Thomas and Marie (Arens) Leonard, and was the oldest of four children. He attended Cathedral High School and Butler University before joining the Navy and serving in the Korean War on the U.S.S. Bellatrix.

Leo married Suzanne “Sue” Kirby June 25, 1955. Together, they built a life founded on love and faith as they raised a family of 10 children. Well-known for helping others, they reached out to those in need by taking in more than 100 foster children over a 40-year span.

A majority of Leo’s career was spent at B & H Tool and Die as a machinist. In his free time, he enjoyed outdoor activities, such as canoe trips, fishing, and boating. A highlight for him every summer would be to give rides on his boat at the annual family lake vacation.

He also had the talent of being able to fix anything, which was a benefit to St. Matthew’s Parish. As an active parishioner, he spent much of his time and effort maintaining the facilities.

He is survived by his wife, Sue (Kirby), and their 10 children: Dan (Kathy), Carol (Bob) Blankman, Steve, Dave, Ken (Sally), Sue (Matt) Glaze, Ted (Judy), Pat, Jeanne (Joe) Hutcherson, and Bob (Umm); 27 grandchildren; sister, Ann (Ray, deceased) Huser and brother Mike (Pat); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 29, at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel.

The funeral mass began at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery.

Donations may be made to St. Matthew’s Parish or the charity of your choice.
