Sr. Noel Marie Worland, 101, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the convent.
Born Nov. 20, 1911 in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of Susan (Wheeler) and John Worland.
She entered the convent Sept. 6, 1931, and made her final vows July 2, 1937. A teacher and principal for 52 years, schools in Indiana included St. Mary’s in Rushville, St. Vincent’s in Vincennes, St. Mary’s in Evansville, St. Andrew’s in Richmond; Little Flower, St. Mark’s and our Lady of Lourdes in Indianapolis; St. Andrew’s in New Richmond, St. Joseph’s in Shelbyville; Infant Jesus School in Tierra Amarilla, N.M., as well as Ohio schools Sacred Heart and St. Clements in Cincinnati, St. Ann’s in Hamilton and St. John’s in Middletown.
She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, kind disposition and love of her students, in addition to the organization she brought to her teaching. A consummate reader, in later years she struggled with limited vision, but with the help of other sisters reading to her, she continued to enjoy the books she so loved.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her stepmother Lucy (Endres) Worland, sister Pauline Buckley, one niece and one nephew.
Visitation is Wednesday, April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the motherhouse chapel in Oldenburg followed by services at 3 p.m., Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
