---- — Sr. Catherine Bernadine Raters, born William Cecile Raters, 84, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Ind., passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at the convent.
Born Aug. 21, 1929 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Cecilia (Dunn) and William Raters.
She entered the convent Sept. 8, 1947 and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1953.
A teacher, Sr. Catherine Bernadine taught students from preschool to junior high. Those schools included St. Aloysius in Covington, Ky., St. Bernard’s in Taylor Creek, Ohio; Holy Trinity in St. Louis, Mo.; St. Mary’s Child Center, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bernadette’s and St. Martin Center College, now Martin University, all in Indianapolis.
She would spend seven years as an administrative assistant at the American State Life Insurance Company in Indianapolis before returning to teaching at Little People’s Preparatory Day School of Indianapolis.
She is survived by her sister, Cecilia Strigari, and brother Michael Raters, both of Indianapolis, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Raters.
Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Sisters of St. Francis Chapel in Oldenburg.
Funeral services follow at 3 p.m., Rev. Robert Gilday officiating, and burial will follow in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, P.O. Box 100, Oldenburg, IN, 473036.
