Jennie Pickett Howell, 94

Jennie Pickett Howell, 94, of Auburn and formerly of Decatur County, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at DeKalb Health in Auburn.

She was a Home Economics Teacher for 30 years, retiring from South Decatur High School. She previously taught at New Point High School and other Decatur County schools as well as schools in Mississippi before moving to Decatur County in 1954. She graduated from Berry High School and Berry College in Rome, Ga.

She was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church, a charter member of Decatur Co. Teachers Organization, the Rural Couples Club, Decatur Co. Farm Bureau, and the IN & Decatur Co. Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Lucky Twelve Extension Homemakers Club and the Lois Chapter of Eastern Star. In the summer of 1944, she worked in the chemical lab at Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Jennie (Peggy) Pickett Howell was born May 31, 1919 to Daniel Foster and Renia Jane (Gross) Pickett in Salecreek, Tenn. She married James Francis Howell Sept. 17, 1944 at Berry College in Rome, Ga. He died April 14, 2006.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law – Dr. James Foster (Kim) Howell of Batesville; two daughters and sons-in-law – Ira Jane (Bob) Johnson of Howe, and Jamie Frances (Bernie) Sukala of Auburn. Her grandchildren include six grandsons: Andrew (Teresa) Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio), James Bryce Howell (Fairborn, Ohio), Scott Foster (Mandy Bauerle) Howell (Cincinnati, Ohio), Christopher (Jessica ) Johnson (W. Lafayette ), David (Jamie) Howell (Jericho, Vt.), and Tim Johnson (Howe); and one granddaughter; Erin Leigh Sukala (Auburn). Also surviving are five great-grandchildren – Addison and Sarah Johnson (Cincinnati Ohio); Jack and Frannie Johnson (Lafayette); and Graham Abaied Howell (Jericho, Vt.). Additional survivors include a brother - Ed Pickett (Loganton, Penn.); two sister-in-laws – Clara Pickett (Brownsburg) and Monte Howell Fricks (Rome, Ga.); and one brother-in-law – Ken (Lynette) Gwinn (Greencastle) ; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
