Phillip E. Powell, 83, of Versailles passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at Arbor Grove Village, Greensburg. He was born near Aurora on Dec. 30, 1930, the son of Walter and Ethel Elwell Powell. He married Ruth Ann Rodgers on Dec. 12, 1951 and his wife of 62 years survives.
Other survivors include two sons: Harold “Gomer” (Sandra) Powell of Milan and Vincent (Jackie) Powell of Versailles; three daughters: Myrtle (Stephen) Redd of Greensburg, Theresa (Larry) Miller of Versailles, and Debra (Doug) Wetzler of Auburn, Georgia; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter: Christine Powell; his brother: Harold Powell; and his sisters: Mary McIntosh and Emma Francis Powell.
Mr. Powell graduated Versailles High School in 1950. He was a former employer of Russell Braley’s Clover Leaf Store, Versailles, and of the Greensburg IGA. He retired from the Aurora Casket Company in 1993 after 43-and-a-half years. Phillip was a member of the Versailles Wesleyan Church.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., June 26, at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles, with Rev. Doug Preston and Rev. Stephen Mullins officiating. Burial will be in Cliff Hill Cemetery, Versailles. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., June 25. Memorials may be given to Rescue 69, the Heart Fund or St. Judes in care of the funeral Home.
