Robert J. Irwin, 85

Greensburg — Robert J. Irwin, 85, Hartsville, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at his residence.

He was born February 25, 1928, in Scipio, the son of Ray B. and Vera (Tooley) Irwin. He was raised in the Scipio Community and had lived in his current Bartholomew County residence since 1958. He graduated Scipio High School in 1946. He had retired in December 1984 as a supervisor with Hamilton–Cosco after 32 years of service.

Mr. Irwin was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church, American Baptist Sandcreek Association, Jefferson Proving Ground/Heritage Partnership and a 50-year member of the Alert Masonic Lodge # 395. He also served as trustee for Bear Creek Baptist Church and Cemetery.

He was a veteran of the US Army, having served with the 45th Division in Korea. He enjoyed his dog “Sugar,” watching and feeding the squirrels and birds in his backyard, and visiting with friends and neighbors. He married Norma Lou Adam at Bear Creek Baptist Church, Oct. 6, 1957, and she survives. Mr. Irwin is survived by family and people who loved him: Mary June Hern of Ocala, Fla.; and Wanda Lee (Bob) Greathouse of Franklin; Max L. (Pam) Irwin of Tempe, Ariz.; Sandra Bower of Sarasota, Fla.; John (Betty) Irwin of Scipio; Mike (Jane) Irwin of Scipio; Keith Irwin of Columbus; Peggy (Dave) Peratt of West Chester, Ohio; Dick (Carolyn) O’Neal of Columbus; Dennis O’Neal of Columbus; Jane (John) Naf of Ocala, Fla.; Deborah (David) Sharp of Columbus; Rhonda (John) Martin of Greenwood; and Lee (Aurie) White of Rockton, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: William and Max T. Irwin; and his sister: Betty J. O’Neal.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., May 13, at Bear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Marvin Wright and Rev. David Burnett officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery, with Military Graveside Services.

A time of visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., May 12, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Jefferson Proving Ground/Heritage Partnership, the Humane Society of Bartholomew County or to the donor’s choice.
