Dr. Helen B. Barnes, 96

Greensburg — Dr. Helen B. Barnes, 96, of Greenwood, passed away May 11, 2013 in Lake Placid, Fla.

She was born July 9, 1916 in Rush County, a daughter of the late Harold L. and Louise (Jackson) Beall.

She is preceded in death by her husband T. James Barnes, and two sisters: Barbara Juday and Hilda Poer.

She is survived by two daughters: Janet (James) Mitchell, Julie (Sam) Smith; one son James H. Barnes; one brother Allan Beall, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two nieces, and seven nephews.

Helen graduated in 1942 from Indiana University Medical School.

She was one of 10 women in her class that also included the late Dr. Otis Bowen, former governor of Indiana.

Helen was a Greenwood pediatrician for 50 years, having retired in 1995. When Johnson Memorial Hospital opened in 1946, Helen was appointed head of the pediatrics department. Helen was the last surviving original founding physician of Johnson County Memorial Hospital. She was the only pediatrician in the county and the first specialist in Greenwood.

Helen was very active upon retirement with tutoring children, delivering Meals on Wheels, walking tours of Indianapolis Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, as well as a docent for the Morris Butler House in Indianapolis.

She was an avid birdwatcher, gardener, and a lifelong member of Greenwood Presbyterian Church. She was the last surviving charter member of P.E.O. Chapter AQ of Greenwood.  

Visitation will be at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 West Main Street, on Thursday evening from 4 to 8 p.m.

The funeral will be on Friday at Greenwood Presbyterian Church, 102 East Main Street, Greenwood at 10 a.m.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The Reverend Cheryl Montgomery will officiate.
