Bert L. Martin, 90

Greensburg — Bert L. Martin, 90, of Yorktown, stepped from the earth to higher ground, at IU Ball Memorial Hospital May 19, 2013, following a brief battle with cancer.

He was born to Ruth Martin in Indianapolis, June 20, 1922. On June 9, 2013, he would have celebrated 68 years of marriage to Ruby (Guinn) Martin.

At the age of 16, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, then joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed on two different Destroyers in World War II from 1941 to 1946. After four years of reserve duty, he was recalled for the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of Tin Can Sailors, Inc. He felt education was very important, so he took classes to finish high school and became a graduate of Muncie Central in 1971. He was a voracious reader.

Even as a 65-year member of Plumbers and Steamfitters local 661, he was still able to do his own plumbing repairs.

He worked 19 years for Johnson Service Co. (Controls), and worked as Project Engineer at Ball State University from where he retired in 1987.

Bert was very active in Muncie area activities.

He was a long-time member of area United Methodist churches, and was a present member of the Yorktown United Methodist church.

Throughout his life he was a Boy Scout Leader, a member of the Selma Town Council and The Parker City Masonic Lodge, on the board of directors for Muncie’s Habitat for Humanity, Delaware county Historical Alliance, ASHRA, as well as an active supporter of his children’s activities.

In addition, he and Ruby were avid campers. They belonged to several camping clubs, including the Muncie Area Campers, Care Free Campers and Northwest Pioneers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Sue Ellen (John) Bennett, Lima, Ohio; two sons, Robert Martin (special friend, Shanna), and Doug (Shonet) Martin of Muncie; grandchildren, Sarah

Bennett, Karen (Nick) Schieltz both of Ohio, Jesse (Chris) Daniel, Austin Klooze, Miranda Klooze (special friend Vaughn), Emily Martin all of Muncie, and James Martin, Willis, Calif., and great-grandfather to seven; a sister, Marie (Gene) Moody, Larry Jester, Parker City, Paul (Pat) Jester, Johnsonville, Tenn., sister-in-law Sammie Jester, Hueston, and 18 nieces and nephews.

He was called “Uncle Bert” by too many others to list. Many people knew him as the “Whatzit” man, because he identified many objects over the years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, two sons, Don Martin and Jerry Martin of Muncie; two sisters, Carolyn VanSkyock and Sandy Adams; and a brother, Jim Jester.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gant Funeral Home, Yorktown.

The Masonic Lodge Freemasons will conduct a service at 1 p.m., prior to the funeral service at 2 p.m. Thursday at Yorktown United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastors Cindy Osgood and Randy Davis. After cremation, he will be buried between his sons at Hawk Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Yorktown Public Library, 8920 W. Adeline St., Yorktown, IN, 47396.
