Paul R. Humphrey, 91, peaceably passed away at R & R Care Facility in San Diego, California. He was born in Decatur County, Indiana, to Jesse G. Humphrey and Maggie Kelsay Humphrey on Nov. 9, 1922.
His father was a sixth generation American farmer of English and Welsh heritage. His mother’s family emigrated from Ireland in the early 1700s. Paul was the youngest of their four children.
Paul was married to Joan Conyers in Greensburg and they celebrated 54 years of marriage before Joan’s passing.
Paul had an early interest in radio and electronics, which he pursued in U.S. Naval training school. After WWII, Paul began his lifelong career in the early computer industry. His chosen career would take him around the world with IBM, Control Data Corp, and CalComp. In 1957, he moved his family to California. Paul was a lifelong member of the Freemasons and the Elks Lodge.
Paul had a lifetime interest in auto racing and attended many international events. In 1975-76 he became a charter member of the Committee of 300 for the Long Beach Formula 5000 and Grand Prix Formula 1 races. He continued to enjoy volunteering with this group through the early 1980s.
He is survived by his children, Gregg Humphrey of Portland, Oregon, and Lynne (Dennis) Murphy of Julian, California.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Russell Humphrey, and sisters, Florine Crawford, Hazel Robertson and Amy Waybright.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at Kingston Presbyterian Church, located at 4783 East County Road 280 North, Greensburg.
