Howard Ayers Jr., 82, Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014. He was born May 17, 1932, the son of Col. Howard Sr. and Sarah (Hege) Ayers.
Howard graduated from Tokyo American School in Japan in 1950, and attended Purdue University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. He married Joan Haupt June 27, 1964, and she survives.
Howard worked as a woodworker and cabinet maker for many years as the owner and operator of Americana Cabinet Co. and as a partner in Continental Kitchens.
He attended Crossroads Community Church. He served as the president of the Lafayette Optimist Club and was a lifetime Endowment Member of the NRA.
Howard loved following current events, woodworking, spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife; son, Howard “Chip” (Lisa) Ayers III, Greensburg; sister, Patricia (Michael) Gallucci, Los Angeles, California; and grandchildren, Paige (Justin) Corbett, Cicero, and Chelsea Perry, Whiteland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Ayers and infant daughter, Sasha Ayers.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, at Glenn E. George & Son Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7 at the funeral home. Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Monday morning at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery in West Lafayette, with Maus Funeral Home handling those arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Shelby County Friends of the NRA or to Crossroads Community Church in care of the funeral home.
