---- — David Hite Porter, 94, of Greensburg, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Morning Breeze in Greensburg.
He was born Sept. 7, 1918 in Hartsville, to Dr. E.A. and Hester (Alley) Porter.
He was a lifelong resident of Decatur and Ripley Counties. He was a 1936 graduate of Westport High School and a 1953 graduate of Indiana University.
Mr. Porter served in the United States Air Force as an officer during the Second World War. He was a basketball coach and teacher at Sandcreek High School, Jac-Cen-Del High School and South Decatur High School. In 2003, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame for his many accomplishments as a high school basketball coach.
His lifelong passion was Indiana High School Basketball. His coaching career began at Sandcreek High School in 1953 with a 122-73 record. His teams there were Decatur County Conference Champions five times and Decatur County Tournament Champions three times. His coaching accomplishments at Jac-Cen-Del included a record of 234-173 with six Ohio River Valley Conference Championships, six Sectionals, two Regionals and was the first coach to win Ripley County Tournament of Champions four times.
He led Jac-Cen-Del to the Final 8 of the State Tournament in 1969. At South Decatur his record was 91-57 and included winning two Mid-Hoosier Conference Championships and being sectional champs in 1983. He received eight Coach of the Year Awards from 1967 through 1989.
He authored two books concerning the game of basketball and his coaching career.
He married Mary Hooker Dec. 7, 1941 in Westport, and she survives. Also surviving are his sons, David Porter of Martinsville and Patrick Porter of Charlotte North Carolina; his brother, Don Porter of Columbus; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lucille Gaynor, Marygail Bentzen, Gene Faulkner and his brothers, Johnny, Robert and Tommy Porter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport, Rev Jon Porter officiating.
Burial will follow at Union Baptist Cemetery with military graveside services.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, at the funeral home.
