Jack Richard Shields, 74

Greensburg — Jack Richard Shields, 74, was born Nov. 27, 1938 in Indianapolis, to Jack Emerson Shields, M.D., and Beatrice Helen (Pedicord) Shields.

He departed this earth May 17, 2013 at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville.

Jack married his loving wife, Janet (Morgan) Shields, Sept. 29, 1980 in Jellico, Tenn.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Jack A. Shields of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Sarah V. Shields of Milton, Fla., Seth M. (Nicole) Shields of Dayton, Ohio, and Katherine E. (Paul) Schils of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The true loves of his life, his grandchildren, also survive: Jake Shields, Lauren Pinkney, Isabella Shields, Conner Shields, and the newest grandchild who was born the day he left this world, Olivia Schils.

He is also survived by three great-grandchildren and his brother, Joseph E. Shields of Greensburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jerry K. Shields.

Jack graduated from high school in his beloved hometown of Brownstown and was class president all four years. He attended Wabash College and was inducted into the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He then transferred to Indiana University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts, a degree in Psychology, and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Indiana University School of Law in 1964.

Jack settled in Batesville and was in the private practice of law for 49 years.

He was a member of the American, Indiana and Ripley County Bar Associations, as well as a past-president of the Ripley County Bar. He served two terms as Ripley County Prosecuting Attorney and was president of the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys’ Association in 1973.

He was also admitted to practice before the Indiana and United States Supreme Courts. He served as town attorney for Milan and Sunman. Jack was proud of the many appeals he filed, several of which resulted in new case laws. He was a fierce advocate of the law and rules of ethics and left no stone unturned when delving into the books to help a client. He offered his services to the indigent long before “free legal aid” was conceived.

In 1983, Jack was appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash Chieftain by Governor Orr. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member of the Boy Scouts. For several years, he served as committee chairman of Troop #634 and taught merit badge courses.

Jack helped form the Batesville PTO, served as president, and was the clown at the PTO’s annual carnival for many years. He was also a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Batesville.

Jack was a family man, a voracious reader, FOX news fanatic, a good cook and enjoyed working in the yard. He had an impressive knowledge of history and political science. He was a patriotic conservative who truly loved his country. Although he ventured away from Brownstown many years ago, his heart remained there with his lifetime friends, the Class of ‘56, whom he met once a month for breakfast.

Visitation will be held at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville, Thursday, May 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the funeral home, with Rev. Dave Johnston officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to Boy Scout Troop #634, or St. John’s United Church of Christ, Batesville.

Burial with be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown.
