Sister Constance Smith, 91, of the Sisters of St. Francis, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at the convent.
Born Nov. 28, 1922 in Batesville, she was the daughter of Teresa (Miller) and Arthur Smith.
She entered the convent Sept. 15, 1942 and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1948. A teacher, she spent three years in elementary education before moving on to secondary education teaching math, physics, chemistry and electronics for more than 50 years.
She retired to the Motherhouse in 1997, but stayed active as Director of Retirement along with some substitute teaching at Oldenburg Academy. Schools at which she taught include Holy Trinity in St. Louis, Mo., Our Lady of Mercy in Dayton, Ohio, Fenwick High School in Middletown, Ohio, St. Mary Academy and Scecina High School in Indianapolis, and Oldenburg Academy in Oldenburg.
Sr. Constance is survived by her sisters, Mildred Schaedel of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Mary Jo Fry of Batesville, and brother Norbert Smith of Carmel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Rita Schneider and brothers George, Harold, Louis and Carl Smith.
Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at the Motherhouse in Oldenburg.
Funeral services followed at 1 p.m., Rev. Joseph Nelson O.F.M. officiating, with burial in the convent cemetery.
