Dr. Carl Edward Overpeck, 82, of Elkhart, died Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at his residence.
Dr. Overpeck was born on March 1, 1931, to Charles and Ione (Gentry) Overpeck in Greensburg. He was a 1949 Graduate of Greensburg High School. On September 1, 1951, he married Dorothy Luken; she survives.
He’s also survived by daughters: Sue (Tom) Williams of Elkhart, Carol Backman of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.; son: Todd Edward Overpeck, of Elkhart; sister: Dorothy Sue (William) Stedman, North Carolina; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister: Jo Ann Robbins; and a brother: James Gentry Overpeck.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.
Dr. Overpeck graduated from Indiana University, 1956. He was a dentist in Elkhart until retiring in 1988. Upon retirement, he attended Indiana University South Bend and became a paralegal. He was employed with the Superior Court of St. Joseph County as a legal researcher from 1990 until 1993.
He volunteered as a court-appointed Special Advocate for Child Abuse Prevention Services. He also went to China as a volunteer with the Notre Dame Geology Department. He enjoyed lawn and garden work, cooking, collecting fossils, playing the piano, and wrote, “Sonata Ionian” in honor of his mother.
Friends may call for two hours prior to the 1 p.m. service May 11, 2013, at Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home, Elkhart.
