James Dale Brodie, 75

Greensburg — James Dale Brodie, 75, Westport, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

He was born Oct. 27, 1937 in Greensburg, the son of Dale and Mary Evelyn (Scroggins) Brodie.

He was a lifelong resident of Decatur County He was a 1955 graduate of Greensburg High School, attended Purdue University briefly and then Indiana University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology.

He retired from the State of Indiana as a Parole Officer after 36 years of service and he also had worked for the Indiana Employment Security Division.

He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Rock Creek Baptist Church where he had served as deacon and adult Sunday School teacher.

He was presented the Sagamore of the Wabash award by Governor Frank O’Bannon in 2000.

He was an avid reader and collector. He enjoyed the outdoors and traveling through the Southwest.

He married Merna Meixner on June 21, 1963 at the Rock Creek Baptist Church. She preceded him in death Sept. 3, 1999.

Survivors include his daughter, Jenni (Andrew) Tucker of Greensburg; his sisters, Mary Jane (Royce) Phares of Houston, Texas and Bonnie (Mike) Goodart of Columbus and a step-grandson, Justin Tucker; a nephew, Chris Martz; and nieces, Jane Ann (Donald) Powers and Kay Martz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Graveside services will be conducted at Rock Creek Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, Rev. Steve Malone officiating.

A gathering of family, friends and a meal will follow the service at the Rock Creek Baptist Church located at 11885 South CR 200 West, Westport, IN.

Memorial contributions may be made through Bass and Gasper Funeral Home to the Southeastern Baptist Youth Camp, World Vision, Boy Scouts of America, Hospice of South Central Indiana or the Salvation Army. Online condolences may be made to the family at
