Greensburg — James Earl Layton, 75, of Westport, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana inpatient facility. He was born on March 3, 1938 in Ocala, Florida to Earl and Maretta (Hessler) Layton.
He has been a Decatur County resident most of his life, graduating from Sandcreek High School in 1955. He retired in 2003 from Interstate Brands after 23 years of service, where he worked as a truck driver. Mr. Layton was a member of the IOOF Lodge #189 and American Legion Post# 339 at Westport. He was an avid reader and enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and taking cruises. He and his wife had visited Australia, New Zeland, Ireland, South Sea Island, Canada and Alaska. He was a veteran having served with the US Army during the Vietnam Era.
He married Edna Caffee in Austin, Tennessee on April 23, 1966, and she survives. He is survived by his sons, James (Wendy) Layton, Michael Grissom, Chris Grissom and Jay (Cecelia) Grissom, all of Westport; daughter, Charlene (Keith) Cooley of Westport; sisters, Betty (Gayle) Gatewood of Westport and Helen (Ron) Graue of Greensburg; brother, Norman (Betty) Layton of Westport; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents
A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at the funeral home, with Rev. Steve Malone officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery with military graveside rites.
