Dick Doles, 78, of Crofton, Md., died Saturday, June 1, 2013. 

He never woke up after having intestinal surgery on May 17, 2013 in Annapolis, Md., at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Dick was born on November 23, 1934, in Greensburg, the son of Robert Doles and Dorothy Elizabeth Dix. He was a school counselor at Batesville High School, Darien High School in Connecticut, Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., schools in Fairfax, Va. and Alabama and Samuel Ogle Jr. Elementary and High Schools in Prince George’s County, Md. He retired in December of 2000.

He began his education in the elementary, junior high and high schools in Decatur County. He was on the basketball and golf teams, played trombone in the school band, and was a part of R.O.T.C. After graduating, he went on to Butler University where he was in Kappa Kappa Psi, an honorary band fraternity, and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Butler before attending Illinois University, where he earned a Master’s degree. He went on to earn his Doctoral degree in school counseling at George Washington University.

Dick was in the United States Air Force for two years. He started the Crofton Pacers running group in the 1970s and completed his last marathon in 2000. He was a team member for the board of directors in Anne Arundel County’s Mental Health Agency in Maryland from 2005 to 2013. He was a board secretary from 2009 to 2013. He was a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Anne Arundel Public Library from 2006 to 2013.

After retirement, he loved taking walks around the neighborhood, talking to the neighbors as he went. He joined the Senior Olympics, where he competed in swimming and badminton. He loved being a substitute teacher and teaching students who were homebound for medical reasons.
