Poteet predicts meatballs for St. Mary's

Greensburg — "Indiana's Weatherman" and radio voice Paul Poteet arrived at St. Mary's Catholic School Monday to read "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" by Judi Barrett.

The St. Mary's kids gave Poteet the royal treatment when he arrived by presenting him with a robe, a Burger King crown, and a scepter with a frog on the end. Lleyton Knecht, third grader, acted as the Master of Ceremonies when Poteet entered the gymnasia by announcing, "Here's your royal scepter. Here's your royal robe."

After Poteet was bedazzled with his Royal Reader garb, the third grade rolled out the red carpet, played the Indiana Jones theme and bowed as Poteet walked past. He greeted his standing subjects by touching each of their shoulders with his scepter before occupying a plush business chair and obtaining his royal word for the day, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs."

Teacher Angie Maloney said that the third grade had been preparing for Poteet's appearance for two weeks. The kids practiced their ceremony once the week before, and once before the actual arrival of the area celebrity. Third grade also made a large thank you card with a cutout of Poteet's face glued over a drawing of him dressed as royalty.

Maloney said many of the kids didn't know who Poteet was, but many recognized his voice from his morning radio shows. She had attempted to contact Poteet in the past to read at St. Mary's, but scheduling proved too difficult. Poteet had been the one to ask if Maloney still wanted a reader while checking old emails Ñ in this case, emails from two years ago.

Poteet has worked in broadcasting for 30 years in both television and radio. Currently he is syndicated on a number of radio stations including 99.5 and 98.7. Poteet has had experience in Greensburg, also.

He worked at WTRE for three years, and has ran in a six-mile relay for local schools.

He said he's always had an interest in weather, even as a child. Poteet described how as a child his parents had set up a map with Plexiglas over it so he could make markings over the map showing wind currents and temperature changes.

Maloney said the kids were excited for Pooteet's appearance and that St. Mary's is always in need of Royal Readers. Poteet was the first Royal Reader of the new school year.
