Greensburg — On July 1, the Decatur County School Corporation (DCSC) welcomed Johnny Budd as its new superintendent.

Before making the move to head the DCSC, Budd was the principal at Jac-Cen-Del High School in Osgood.

In a brief phone interview with the Daily News earlier this month, Budd characterized the move as a natural and logical progression at this point in his career.

After having served as a high school principal for several years, Budd said he's "ready for a move," adding, "I want to see how much more impact I can have as a superintendent."

"With Decatur County Community Schools being just one county to the south of Jac-Cen-Del,Ó" he continued, "I knew I'd be moving to a familiar rural, small-town setting, which is what I'm used to and what I like."

Budd added that Decatur County schools have a solid reputation for providing a quality education to students.

"I wanted to be part of that," he said.

He continued, "I'm still getting to know everyone, but I've been extremely impressed with everyone so far. Everyone here -- from teachers to support staff and everyone in between-- seems to have a genuine interest in and passion for education, and I'm looking forward to working with them to help our district reach its goals."

Chief among those goals, he said, is to prepare students to succeed in an ever-changing 21st Century world.

"At this age, many students simply don't have a clear idea of what they want to do with their lives," he said. "Many of them will change careers at some point, and some of them will do so multiple times. We don't have a crystal ball; we can't predict who'll change and who won't, and neither can we predict on which career paths students will finally settle. Part of our jobs as educators is to help students recognize and acknowledge that uncertainty. We want them to understand that the more education one gains -- the more knowledge -- the more options become available in case one changes his or her mind as the future unfolds. And with more options, comes a greater likelihood of success, happiness and fulfillment."
