Routine maintenance, new hires, highlight DCCS meeting

Greensburg — At its regular meeting Wednesday night, the Decatur County Community Schools (DCCS) Board attended to routine summer maintenance and approved a number of new hires for the upcoming school year.

According to DCCS Superintendent Johnny Budd, five water heaters throughout the school district will be replaced during summer break, and all the district’s parking lots will be resealed and striped.

Additionally on Wednesday night, the board also finalized replacement of the gym floor at South Decatur Elementary School.

“We’ve been talking about that a couple months,” Budd explained. “The floor dates back to the mid-1950s and it’s buckling. Each of the pieces of wood are curling up, creating an uneven surface.”

The board also approved electrical work to be completed that will allow the district’s diesel school buses to be plugged directly in during cold winter months. To that end, Budd explained, electrically-connected metal poles will be placed outside, in close proximity to the buses, allowing them to be plugged in during cold months when not in use.

According to the superintendent, diesel-fueled vehicles come with electrical outlets so they can be directly plugged up, preventing the diesel fuel from becoming overly thick.

“If diesel fuel gets too thick,” Budd said, “the engine doesn’t want to start.”

Also on Wednesday night, the board approved an across-the-board increase in lunch and breakfast prices at all of the district’s schools. The increases will apply to both student and adult meals, Budd said.

Asked what precipitated the price hike, Budd responded, “Have you been to the grocery store lately? Costs are going up.”

One new hire was finalized Wednesday night for North Decatur Elementary School; the board approved Lauren Reynolds to teach 4th grade, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

Two hires were finalized for South Decatur Elementary School: Mallory Devens with teach sixth and Heidi Beagle will teach fourth grade, both also beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

For South Decatur High School, the board finalized the hiring of Biology Teacher Kara Cheslock and of Math Teacher Erin Fee, both also beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

“We’re excited with the team we’re assembling,” Budd said. “And we’re looking forward toward the new school year.”

The next regular meeting of the Decatur County Community Schools Board will be at 6 p.m., July 24, at the District Administration Building.
