St. Mary’s kids help other kids

Greensburg — Two of St. Mary’s third grade classes chose the Kid’s Closet as their service project this year, donating their own clothing to other kids in need.

Spearheaded by third-grade teacher, Angie Maloney, the St. Mary’s kids decorated posters and boxes with crayons and markers, and brought their own gently-used clothing to go to the First Christian Church’s Kid’s Closet.

The Kid’s Closet’s founder, Sue Abplanalp, was unable to say how much clothing was gathered, but described the project as immensely successful.

“Thank you for getting so many clothes for us,” Sue told the gathering of students in St. Mary’s gymnasium, “Now other kids can be dressed like you are.”

Abplanalp said St. Mary’s plans to adopt the Kid’s Closet as a service project next year.

The third grade classes also made posters for the Kid’s Closet upcoming “garage sell.” The signs, said Abplanalp, will be posted by Greensburg High School’s National Honor Society and Jr. Optimist Club.

The garage sell is still free to people in need of clothing for their children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

In addition to giving clothes to those in need, the Kid’s Closet will be accepting free-will donations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 11, at the First Christian Church.

Preceding the garage sell, the Kid’s Closet will be closed May 8, until August, when school begins again.

“To take a break,” said Abplanalp.

The charity’s 45 volunteers need a reprieve, she explained.

Donations will still be accepted throughout the summer at three drop-off locations: The Decatur County YMCA, The Greensburg Fire Department (which is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day), and the Greensburg-Decatur County Library.

The First Christian Church is located at 425 North Broadway, Greensburg.
