Laura Wilson (daughter of Linda and Buddy Wilson, Lawrenceburg) a member of the Oldenburg Academy Orchestra, directed by Kris Wampler, has been chosen to represent Oldenburg Academy in the percussion section of the of the “Select” 2013 Indiana Bandmasters Association All-State Honor Band.
Members of the All-State Honor Band earned this honor by participating in a highly competitive audition held early in January at nine centers across Indiana. Over 750 talented young musicians applied to audition. A selection committee then reviewed the recordings from each center.
One hundred sixty-five outstanding students from 54 high schools have been selected for participation in the 2013 Festival. Dr. Tom Caneva, from Ball State University, will direct the 82 piece Indiana All-State Band. In addition to the regular Indiana All-State Band, there is a select Honor Band, which Wilson has been selected for. Paul Popiel, from the University of Kansas, will direct the 83-member Indiana All-State Honor Band.
“This is a great honor!” said Academy Orchestra director, Kris Wampler. “She auditioned on Snare Drum, Marimba, and Tympanies and was accepted for all three as a sophomore in high school.” But Wilson’s prior accomplishments have indicated that this isn’t the peak.
The 16-year-old has been playing percussion since she was 12 and has been awarded with countless honors and recognitions since she first picked up the sticks and mallets. This past fall, she was selected to participate in the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Concert Orchestra and shortly after was chosen to perform in the 2013 NKU Tri-State Band Symposium, a program that allows some of the Tri-State’s most talented wind and percussion players to play under world-class conductors.
Laura, in addition to all of the other members of the All-State Honor Bands will participate in a series of activities including seating auditions, sectionals, and full rehearsals from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10. A grand finale concert will be presented to the public on Sunday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the Elliott Hall of Music on the Purdue University – West Lafayette campus. Directions to Elliott Hall of Music may be found on the Indiana Bandmasters Association website at www.indianabandmasters.org.
