SDHS honors graduate steps onto next stage of life

GREENSBURG — South Decatur High School (SDHS) senior and student actor Caleb Newlin took his final bow from the SDHS stage with April’s production of “Just Another High School Play.”

On Saturday morning, Newlin took yet another final bow, this one on a much larger stage; this one with much larger implications for his life and future.

Shakespeare once wrote that, “All the world’s a stage,” and as Newlin took his turn in line at Saturday’s SDHS graduation, stepping up to the dais to accept his Honors diploma, those words suddenly took on deeper significance for him more than for most.

Newlin has been accepted as a Drama major at Ball State University, Muncie, starting in the fall, meaning his last SDHS production will soon give way to his first Ball State production.

All told, he participated in nine plays at SDHS and agreed that, although he’s never taken an acting class, those productions certainly helped him in auditioning for acceptance into Ball State’s Drama program Feb. 22.

“They were closed auditions,” Newlin recalled, “very professional, no pictures allowed and no distractions.”

Newlin went to the auditions having memorized two monologues, but only recited one of them. He left uncertain if only reciting one of the two was a good sign or bad, but feeling positive overall about the audition itself.

His acceptance letter came a few weeks later, in March.

Newlin recalled that holding the unopened letter was surreal; a part of him couldn’t bear opening it. “The world stopped,” he said. “The only thing that mattered was that letter.”

Finally, he worked up the courage to open it and, “An insane amount of pressure just fell off my shoulders. I couldn’t stop smiling. My future was set.”

Newlin’s long-term goal is to “carve a niche” as a stage actor, and he’s convinced Ball State’s intensive curriculum of acting workshops and classes will help him take the first steps toward that objective.
