Greensburg — The Decatur County Relay for Life (DCRL) will hold its inaugural “Jr. Purple Tie Bash” from 3:30 to 7 p.m., May 17, at the Greensburg Armory.

DCRL Publications Committee Chairman Mark Taylor told the Daily News the event is designed to both help involve more junior-high-age kids in Relay for Life’s fight against cancer and to keep current members engaged in the fight.

He noted that DCRL already has a significant presence in area junior high schools. In fact, kids interested in attending can purchase tickets to the $5 event through their grade-level DCRL Captain: Vincent Pavy, of Greensburg Junior High School (GJHS), is the sixth-grade captain; while Kaylea Taylor of GJHS is the grade 7 captain; Emily Greiwe, also from GJHS, is the eighth-grade captain.

The event will include a DJ and a meal of hot dogs, various chips and drinks.

“This event is specifically geared for grades six through eight,” Taylor explained. “We hope kids will come out to have a good time and help raise money for a good cause.”

He continued, “Cancer affects everyone, across every age group, and that’s why it’s important to get these kids involved.”

Taylor added that even kids who haven’t yet been directly impacted by cancer are likely to face it at some point in their lives, either directly or indirectly.

Purple attire is not required for the Jr. Purple Tie Bash, but it is “greatly appreciated,” Taylor said, adding that there’s no formal dress code for the event. “Dress casual attire or jeans will be fine.”

Admission to the event is $5, with all proceeds benefiting the annual Decatur County Relay for Life Walk, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 6 p.m., June 21 and 22, at the Decatur County Fair Grounds.
