Greensburg — Last week was volunteer appreciation week at South Decatur Elementary School (SDES).

In honor of that designation, students and teachers made cards to thank the 37 regular, active volunteers that work at the school weekly doing whatever is needed. The cards were mailed out to volunteers when they were completed.

Many helpers read to students and assist in classrooms, while others run errands for teachers and complete any task the staff asks of them. This hardworking crew of generous individuals is a huge help to both students and teachers on a weekly basis and their assistance is much appreciated by those on the receiving end of the help, school staff said.

Four of the volunteers are retired teachers. In all, the volunteers have donated 782 hours of their time for free, helping the students and teachers of SDES in any way they can. One volunteer, a retired teacher, logged more than 127 hours by herself during her regular visits.

The studenst and staff of South Decatur Elementary School stated they would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all volunteers who have donated their time.
