Good Shepherd expanding with help from legislative changes

Greensburg — Good Shepherd Christian Academy hopes to benefit from recent changes to Indiana law expanding opportunities for private schools and their students.

The non-denominational Christian school, housed at First Baptist Church in Greensburg, is currently enrolling students for the 2013-2014 school year and expects to expand classes as enrollment continues to grow. Recent legislative changes have aided in increasing the school’s growth, allowing Good Shepherd to offer even more opportunities to students and families who want a Christian education (preschool through sixth grade) in our community.

Thanks to the Indiana General Assembly in the 2013 session, the law now allows students with special needs (identified by an IEP or ISP) whose family income meets the state guidelines to access a voucher to attend the private school. In addition, the law now allows siblings of students who previously received a voucher or scholarship from a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) to access a voucher to attend the private school. Previously, both categories of students would have needed to attend a public school for two previous semesters before being eligible for the voucher for private school.

Legislative changes in 2013 also allow any student in the private school meeting the income criteria to access a scholarship from an SGO, which then allows that student to be eligible for a voucher in successive years. Previously, only students entering the private school in kindergarten were eligible for such benefits.

Good Shepherd currently accepts students who receive vouchers and is now enrolling students who qualify for vouchers under the new laws. There are also SGO scholarship opportunities available for those who meet the income criteria. The typical family of four qualifies for the voucher program if their income is at or below $85,000. Those income guidelines change based on household size.

The school boasts a full-day academic program in its Kindergarten-Prep (K4) class, and expects to double its capacity for students in that class in the 2013-14 school year. Along with this expansion, the school has job opportunities for teachers who have a desire to teach in a Christian school.

Anyone wishing to apply for such an opening or who has questions about voucher or scholarship opportunities should stop by to visit the school or contact Janet Hodson, Administrative Coordinator for Good Shepherd, at 663-2410.
