Optimist club recognizes “Youth Appreciation Week”

Greensburg — Each year, over 2,000 Optimists Clubs throughout the U.S. sponsor Youth Appreciation Week. Locally, the week of Nov. 12 to 18 has been selected, and the Greensburg Optimist Club asks citizens countywide to join us as we attempt to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of youth.

Past programs have recognized youth activites such as heroism, church work, tutoring, voluteerism, scholarship and many other acts of service.

In times when much press is given to the foolish acts of a few, it’s refreshing to learn of the solid and beneficial contributions of today’s youth.

Friday, the Greensburg Optimist Club, as part of Youth Appreciation Week, is sponsoring its annual “Youth Forum” at WTRE Radio from 8 to 9 a.m. The program will be conducted in a question-and-answer format, with three Decatur County teenagers responding to a wide variety of topics.

The forum is designed to encourage a great exchange of ideas between adults and youth. Hopefully, this interchange will lead to a broader understanding of each other’s problems.

The youth forum will be broadcast live, with the Greensburg Daily News covering the event for a story in Saturday’s edition.

The Youth Forum is just a start. The real key to a successful Youth Appreciation Week comes not from planned events or editorials in newspapers; it comes from people.

Don’t leave the Greensburg Optimist Club to do what can best be done on an individual basis; don’t wait for someone else to tell a young person you know and appreciate what he or she is doing.

Do it yourself; do it today. It could just make for a better tomorrow.

Bill Wenning is the Greensburg Optimist Club’s co-chair of Youth Appreciation Week.
