Decatur schools award scholarships to graduating seniors

Greensburg — On Tuesday, North Decatur High School (NDHS) hosted the 29th annual ceremony awarding 22 graduating students from North and South Decatur High Schools approximately $85,000 in scholarship money for college.

“We are here to celebrate your successes in your high school career,” said Lora Williams, Scholarship Foundation president.

After thanking North and South Decatur High Schools’ presidents and superintendent for their work with the schools, Williams announced how much each student would be receiving.

Four students received the Lehman Scholarship:

Veronica Yager from North Decatur received a total of $20,000; Michael Oestendorf received a total of $13,627; Justin Hill from South Decatur received a total of $20,000; and Taylor Barkdull received a total of $13,627.

Jason Kirchoff received $1,000 from the Russell Corya Memorial Ag. Scholarship.

Elizabeth Lecher received $1,000 from the Robert Friedersdorf Memorial Ag Scholarship.

Brandon Hocker received $1,000 from the Shirk English Scholarship.

Zachary Meyers from North Decatur received a total of $4,000 from the Sparks Memorial Scholarship.

Tressalynn Owens from South Decatur received a total of $4,000 from the Rise-Sparks Scholarship.

Kelsey Johnson received $1,000 from the Jean A. Reed Memorial Scholarship.

Nicholas Gehrich, Claire Smith and Morgan Tomson each received $1,000 from the Cecilia Springmeyer Memorial Scholarship.

Jessica Cunningham, John Hammersmith, Sarah Horan, Lindsay Nobbe, Ray Ann Noble, Kaitlynn Scheidler, Olivia Smoth, Breanna Speer, and Jeffrey White received $1,000 each in general scholarships.

“These scholarships are presented to seniors who have worked hard and excelled academically throughout their high school years,” said Williams, “Our board hopes that, with the help of this money, these young people will be able to continue to excel.”

  • SDES “Pinocchio” is great family fun

    WESTPORT – Fifth and sixth grade students at South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) will stage a production of Disney’s “My Son Pinocchio Jr.” at 7 p.m. on April 24 and 25 at the school.

    After the roles were cast, students began practicing under the tutelage of SDES music teacher Karen Meeker in September.
