GCS board sees spoils of Chautauqua

Lunch policy to change

Greensburg — In the regularly scheduled Greensburg Community Schools meeting (GCS) Tuesday night, minor changes were made in policy, and teacher John Pratt told the board of his first successful GHS Chautauqua.

Seven students who Pratt picked as having the best projects gave brief descriptions of their efforts. The projects included Greensburg history, baseball history and recreations.

Pratt also displayed the projects of three students who could not attend the meeting, showing off a recreation of the Wright plane, a hand-crafted Mayan calendar and a 50-page movie script.

Also mentioned was that Arnie Duncan, Secretary of Education of the United States, sent a letter congratulating Pratt and his students for the popular Chautauqua event. When asked why the letter was sent, Pratt jokingly said he was buddies with Duncan.

In other news, there will be a change in lunch policy next year.

When students have accumulated $10 of lunch charges, a letter will be sent to parents informing them of the outstanding balance. When $50 has been accumulated, a second letter will be sent. If the balance is not paid, the issue will be turned over to small claims court. Parents will also be responsible for court fees.

GCS superintendent Tom Hunter mentioned that a downside in GCS’ computer system is that students cannot view their balances at the registers.

However, while students without money in their accounts are not able to purchase a la cart items, students will never be denied a Grade A lunch, regardless of account balances.

Parents who believe they qualify for free or reduced lunches can apply for the program anytime during the year.

During the time set aside for patron comment, Brian Wenning thanked the school board for the use of the GHS gymnasium. The gym was used to hold the 2,500-person attendance of the funeral held for the Butz and Horan families. Both families are well-known, and the Decatur County/Greensburg communities mourned en mass after Don and Barb Horan, and Stephen and Denise Butz’s tragic deaths in a plane crash.
