The Cougars began play a day late because of weather delays on Tuesday but forgot to bring their bats as Cassie Loweth held South Decatur to Haley Holdreith’s seventh inning single to lead the Columbus North Bulldogs to a 10-0 win.
The Lady Cougars remained in the game through four innings but defensive lapses in the fifth and seventh innings permitted Columbus North to pull away.
Chasity Rose pitched for South and gave up 11 hits but only one earned run. She also issued four walks while striking out one. Defensively three errors open the flood gates and cost South most of the runs scored by the visitors.
“It was a good game to see where we are and where we need to go defensively.” reported Coach Lisa Huff. “It was good to get to play on the field and outside and to get a game played.”
With little outdoors practice, Huff said her team had a tough draw in facing the Columbus North ace for their first game.
“Loweth is a very good pitcher, throws the ball hard and has a variety of pitches that kept our girls off guard,” she said.
